  Cuando el hombre se hizo sedentario y estableció comunidades allá por el Neolítico, comenzó a preguntarse cómo se transmitían las características de unas generaciones a otras y obtuvo, sin conocerlo, resultados positivos en el desarrollo de la domesticación de plantas y animales. Es hasta los siglos XIX y XX que no se conoció exactamente como se transmitían y a través de qué vehículo. Aparece el cromosoma como el orgánulo que se encarga de ello. En el presente trabajo se hace un breve resumen de su historia.
