Desde su 12.ª edición, el DLE incluye una entrada heteromancia, vocablo que estaría formado con el prefijo hetero- y sería sinónimo de ornitomancia. Este artículo contradice ambos supuestos. La eteromancia es una palabra acuñada por Calderón como sinónimo de aeromancia, que denota la adivinación mediante el examen del aire (éter), de los fenómenos que en él se producen y de los seres que lo habitan. La grafía etheromancia de un manuscrito que lleva la firma del propio Calderón, acredita la etimología que aquí se defiende. La heteromancia canonizada por la Academia es un fantasma que debe corregirse en futuras ediciones del DLE.
Beginning with its 12th edition, the DLE has included an entry for heteromancia, identified etymologically as containing the prefix hetero- and semantically as a synonym of ornitomancia. This article contradicts both assumptions.
Eteromancia was coined by Calderón as a synonym of aeromancia, which denotes divination through observation of the air (ether), including the phenomena produced in it and the beings that inhabit it. The spelling etheromancia, which appears in a manuscript that bears the signature of Calderón himself, supports the etymology proposed here. The Academy’s heteromancia is thus shown to be a ghost word that should be corrected in future editions of the DLE.
