El que sabem de la prehistòria gironina s’ha anat guanyant al llarg del temps, des de la troballa casual de ceràmica prehistòrica a can Pau Birol i les primeres visites a la cova de les Goges de Sant Julià de Ramis fins avui. Durant un llarg període les dades les va proporcionar la recerca voluntariosa de persones benemèrites que s’hi van interessar. Les primeres exploracions sistemàtiques les portà a terme l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans als anys vint i trenta del segle passat. La segona meitat de segle el Museu Arqueològic, el Servei d’Investigacions Arqueològiques de la Diputació de Girona i la Universitat de Girona van anar assumint la major part de la recerca. Hi ha tingut un paper destacat l’Associació Arqueològica de Girona, especialment en la identificació del paleolític inferior de Catalunya. Des dels anys noranta una carta arqueològica cada vegada més completa és la base de les excavacions preventives que acompanyen els treballs en infraestructures, construcció i remodelació, que són els que actualment aporten nous jaciments. Amb tot, no totes les etapes de la prehistòria estan ben representades al territori de Girona.
All we know about Girona’s prehistory has been gained over time, from the chance finding of prehistoric pottery in Can Pau Birol and the first visits to the Goges cave in Sant Julià de Ramis until today. For a long time data were provided by the voluntary research of worthy people interested in it. The first systematic explorations were made by Institute of Catalan Studies in the 1920s and 1930s. In the second half of the 20th century, the Archaeological Museum of Girona, the Archaeological Research Service of Diputació de Girona and University of Girona took over most of the research. The Archaeological Association of Girona has played a prominent role, especially in the identification of the Lower Palaeolithic of Catalonia. Since the 1990s, an increasingly complete archaeological map has been the basis of the preventive excavations that accompany works on infrastructure, construction and remodelling, which are currently bringing new sites to light. However, not all stages of prehistory are well represented in the territory of Girona.
