1. Introducción y motivación: La presente investigación cuantitativa y cualitativa de carácter empírico analiza las estrategias de persuasión verbal presentes en un corpus de escritos políticos de George Ridpath producidos en Gran Bretaña durante el reinado de Ana Estuardo a propósito de la campaña para la paz (1710-1713) en el contexto de la Guerra de Sucesión Española (1702-1714) con los siguientes objetivos generales. Por un lado, analizar el modo en que el discurso persuasivo se manifiesta en recursos verbales presentes en los ensayos políticos de Ridpath durante la citada campaña, género que se convirtió progresivamente en arma propagandística de primer orden, desbancando al panfleto en su poder de influencia. Y por otro lado, desvelar la intención del emisor, sus códigos y valores sociales a través del análisis de las diferentes estrategias retóricas utilizadas en la transmisión del mensaje y descubrir posibles estrategias encubiertas de manipulación en el discurso político. La selección del corpus no es fortuita, pues a pesar de los numerosos estudios existentes sobre la comunicación política, son escasas las publicaciones que versan sobre la naturaleza persuasiva de los escritos políticos en Gran Bretaña durante el periodo Estuardo tardío y aún menor los que abordan la Guerra de Sucesión Española. Así, este trabajo profundiza en el tema analizando el lenguaje empleado por George Ridpath en dos periódicos de la época abordando el debate nacional que se produjo entre whigs y tories en torno a la causa bélica. En cuanto a la elección del autor, si bien la gran mayoría de trabajos académicos se han centrado en escritores de la talla de Jonathan Swift o Daniel Defoe, la gran labor propagandística sobre la opinión pública de George Ridpath ha sido inexplicablemente poco considerada en la investigación científica; es más, tan solo existen dos publicaciones menores sobre el lenguaje empleado por este polemista y periodista político. Con todo lo anterior, la presente investigación viene a llenar un hueco en los estudios de base retórica a propósito del discurso político de un autor que, aunque poco conocido para el gran público, ejerció una poderosa influencia en la opinión pública inglesa en una época en la que las publicaciones periódicas se consideraban poderosos instrumentos de difusión de ideologías, de persuasión y de legitimación política y social. 2. Contenido de la investigación: Este trabajo consta de cuatro capítulos. En el primero se delimita el contexto histórico y político en el que se encuadra la investigación, se profundiza en la figura de George Ridpath y se presentan los periódicos de los que consta el corpus manejado en la investigación. Asimismo, se ofrece una panorámica de las disciplinas implicadas en el análisis del discurso político y se presentan otras disciplinas empleadas en este estudio. En el segundo capítulo, se ofrecen los marcos teóricos del análisis. El tercer capítulo constituye el grueso del presente trabajo, pues recoge todos los recursos analizados y los resultados agrupados cronológicamente y según el periódico en el que aparecen. Y por último, en el cuarto capítulo se extraen las conclusiones que se derivan del análisis efectuado, se valora la contribución de este trabajo a la investigación científica y se proponen posibles líneas de investigación futuras. 3. Conclusiones y reflexiones finales: Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que Ridpath emplea diferentes recursos verbales de naturaleza persuasiva así como un lenguaje cargado emocionalmente de patriotismo tanto para atacar a sus oponentes como denunciar aquello que cree injusto tanto dentro del ámbito político como monárquico y religioso e incluso de la esfera social. Así, en los escritos analizados se aprecia que este autor combina distintas estrategias retóricas de manipulación y apela directamente a las emociones del lector a través del pathos, lo que contribuye decisivamente a su propósito persuasivo. Además, el análisis de cada uno de los recursos persuasivos demuestra que los líderes políticos son conscientes de que las opciones léxicas que los usuarios de la lengua emplean tienen un tremendo potencial para la persuasión de las masas y un profundo impacto en cómo se perciben los fenómenos sociales y políticos. Por tanto, se confirmaría que la lengua es una poderosa arma de persuasión al servicio de los políticos para modelar la opinión pública no solo a su favor, sino en contra de los oponentes; lo que, a su vez, entronca con el fenómeno de polarización de van Dijk (1999: 95) o el sistema de legitimación y deslegitimación de Chilton (2004: 23, 47). Pero, además, la aplicación de los rasgos de la Teoría de la Valoración de Martin y White (2005) de gradación, que intensificaría la fuerza negativa del mensaje, y de actitud, que transmitiría la evaluación negativa de la actitud humana, otorga a los recursos verbales más poder dentro de los textos analizados. Esto ratificaría que Ridpath escoge cuidadosamente aquellas opciones morfosintácticas y léxico-semánticas con ánimo de persuadir y seducir con la palabra. Así, Ridpath emplea los atenuadores y enfatizadores con dos claros objetivos: por una parte, deslegitimar la opinión del bando contrario (papistas y católicos) así como de fuentes enemigas (Abel Roper y The Examiner, principalmente); y por otra parte, defender sus ideologías políticas y abogar a favor de la sucesión protestante. Por tanto, se confirma también que las estrategias retóricas de atenuación y de intensificación son un fiel reflejo de determinados códigos sociales, de valores y de ideologías. Igualmente, tanto en un periódico como en el otro, el eufemismo y cuasidisfemismo se emplean principalmente para la desacreditación de fuentes y autores de la facción contraria. Esto demuestra que Ridpath elige aquellas expresiones más aceptables para no poner en peligro su imagen propia o la del periódico. Ello también ratifica que estos recursos son un elemento esencial del lenguaje políticamente correcto y un arma poderosa para atacar de forma encubierta al adversario político en lugar del ataque frontal que supone el disfemismo. Finalmente, el análisis demuestra que el lenguaje figurado es esencial dentro de la comunicación política pues permite legitimar al propio grupo (autorrepresentación positiva) o deslegitimar al oponente (representación negativa). Por tanto, se corrobora que el lenguaje metafórico y metonímico desempeña un papel relevante en la creación del significado, en la concepción de la realidad y en el ataque verbal propio del discurso político. 4.
