La política ha captado la atención de filósofos e historiadores desde la antigüedad griega. Poco a poco el estudio de los fenómenos políticos se ha ido afinando, de manera tal que en la época contemporánea se puede hacer una clara distinción entre filosofía política (el deber ser de la política) y ciencia política (la política tal cual es). Analizar y discutir los asuntos públicos, el bien común y las relaciones de poder es algo que se hizo desde la antigüedad, cuando surgió la filosofía política. Lo que es relativamente moderno es el estudio de la política como ciencia, ya que una disciplina adquiere el carácter de científica cuando tiene un objeto autónomo y específico de conocimiento y sus propios métodos de investigación.
Ever since Ancient Greece, politics has captured the attention of both philosophers and historians. Gradually, the study of philosophical phenomena has been refined to a degree where contemporary thought can make a clear distinction between Political Theory and Political Science. The analysis of public affairs, the notion of common good and power relations have all been studied from the time Philosophical Theory first emerged. However, what is deemed ‘modern’ is the study of politics as a science, given that discipline is believed to be scientific when it has a specific and independent object of study with its own research methods.
