En este trabajo abordaremos el motín del galeón San Jerónimo en aguas del océano Pacífico. Su importancia e interés está en contar con un completo relato del suceso y redactado por uno de sus protagonistas, cuyo contenido y análisis nos ha permitido conocer en profundidad cómo se gesta un motín en alta mar. Así, el presente estudio lo iniciamos con unos claros antecedentes en la armada de Legazpi y su situación de necesidad, causas del apresto y envío del San Jerónimo. Luego se desarrolla los preparativos de ese primer socorro en base a la correspondencia de la Real Audiencia de México y las autoridades locales para reunir pertrechos y hombres. Posteriormente, analizamos la figura de Juan Martínez de Arestizábal, autor del relato, así como de su relación, para después imbuirnos en el espeluznante viaje del galeón y su tripulación con sus desventuras, tragedias y descubrimientos insulares. Finalmente, en los dos últimos apartados tratamos el destino final del galeón tras su llegada a Cebú y las posibles teorías sobre Lope Martín y los abandonados en una isla tras recuperar el barco los leales a la Corona.
In this work we will address the mutiny of the galleon San Jerónimo in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Its importance and interest lie in having a complete account of the event written by one of its protagonists, whose content and analysis has allowed us to know in depth how a mutiny on the high seas takes place. Thus, we begin this study with a clear background on the Legazpi navy and its situation of need, causes of the preparation and sending of the San Jerónimo. Then the preparations for that first relief are developed based on the correspondence of the Royal Court of Mexico and the local authorities to gather supplies and men. Subsequently, we analyze the figure of Juan Martínez de Arestizábal, author of the story, as well as their relationship, and then immerse ourselves in the terrifying journey of the galleon and its crew with their misadventures, tragedies and island discoveries. Finally, in the last two sections we discuss the final destination of the galleon after its arrival in Cebu and the possible theories about Lope Martín and those abandoned on an island after those loyal to the Crown recovered the ship.
