In this brief article Yakov Malkiel considers the case of sound correspondences in Castilian words of Latin origin. He reviews how some of the earliest figures in comparative linguistics conceived of such correspondences as cultismos and points to the complexity of studying such correspondences, which can be considered as both deriving from Latin, as well as being borrowings from other languages, such as Italian.
