Don Quixote subtly, yet fundamentally, incorporates three voyages to America in its First Part. These moments, hidden within the main plot, serve to contrast and compete with the knight’s imaginings, anchoring the novel in a real and enigmatic wonder (America) that rivals the fictional wonder of La Mancha. We will then examine the voyage of the Biscayan woman and her husband to America (chapters 8-9), the reference to two of the captive’s brothers when he recounts his story (chapters 39-41), and Clara’s future journey to the Indies to accompany her father, who, as we discover, is one of the captive’s brothers (chapter 43). Don Quixote almost returns America to a moment of origins, recalling the wonder of the unknown and competing with an entire continent. The contest is between the wonder of the unseen and the wonder of Cervantes’s own traces (the novel itself).
