Ruth Behar’s recent middle-grade novels, Lucky Broken Girl (2017), Letters from Cuba (2019), Across So Many Seas (2024), and her picture book, Tía Fortuna’s New Home (2022) reveal the positioning of these texts as models of ethnographic and linguistic salvage in everyday life.
This article analyzes Behar’s poetic sensibility as she presents different elements of Judeo-Spanish and Sephardic culture in her multilingual and multicultural books. The books reveal characters who are cultural inheritors participating in the exploration of a tangible and intangible Sephardic heritage. They bring with them the time-specific limitations and strengths of their individual geographies and social landscapes. Through the help of their grandparents and elders, these protagonists are able to access the past and build a bridge to the future of Sephardic transmission in a contemporary American context.
