The aim of this work is to conduct a contrastive Spanish/Arabic study of idiomatic expressions based on gestures and body movements (visible or invisible) for educational and translation purposes. Based on theories of embodiment, 422 Spanish expressions were selected, classified into six main categories according to the type of gesture underlying them (tactile, facial-ocular, etc.), and then compared with their Arabic counterparts, analyzing similarities and differences. The analysis takes into account not only the image but also the morpho-syntactic configuration. Only 59 expressions match in form and content, a figure that rises to 104 (25% of the corpus) if we limit ourselves to the image. This can have important didactic and translational repercussions. Aside from the influence of local components (bullfighting or historical background, for example), it seems that certain structural or decorous reasons can also prevent the lexicalization of equivalent idiomatic expressions in both languages.
