In the Soledades Góngora set out to write an epic poem different from its classical and Renaissance antecedents. He diminished the role of plot and characters to enhance the physical descriptions, which are the support of a complex poetic language. To highlight that physical reality and that hermetic language he reduced the omniscience of the narrator, who was limited to tell what the protagonist's eyes could perceive. The restriction of its narratorial capacity prevented Góngora from developing the extensive and varied story that had in mind. In adition, the unusual proliferation of conceits and hyperbatos made more dificcult to build a story. The Soledades offer an idealized image of a stately Andalusian domain, suggesting that rural beauty and peasant simplicity in themselves imply goodness and harmony, but the reader can also imagine the reality that existed behind the words.
