This article analyzes the development of essay writing in Mex-ico, emphasizing the shift from a civic cultural essay to one characterized by a creative ludic profile. The analysis focuses on how the institutionalization of the essay during the final de-cades of the 20th century limited the genre’s sociocultural and critical functions. This phenomenon is attributed to the prevail-ing notion of literature, the disconnection between academic knowledge and aesthetic writing, and the emergence of a rel-ative autonomy within the literary field. Furthermore, these processes entailed transformations in the practice of literary criticism, the conception of the writer as a public intellectual, and the very viability of the lettered city.
