Laura Alcoba’s work has consistently attracted critical attention for three interrelated reasons: her decision to write in the language of exile, French; her sustained engagement with the traumatic memories of her childhood during the Argentine dictatorship; and her distinctive narrative poetics, which challenge conventional generic boundaries by combining autobiographical, autofictional, and fictional strategies. Rather than offering coherent or definitive testimony, Alcoba constructs fragmented narratives that foreground the instability of memory and the impossibility of fully recovering traumatic experience. This article examines the evolution of Alcoba’s narrative project through her major works. It traces the movement from the hybrid first-person narratives of La casa de los conejos, El azul de las abejas, and La danza de la araña, where autobiography and autofiction converge in a fragmented narrative voice negotiating between childhood memory and adult retrospection, to La ronda nocturna, which reconstructs, through the memories of others and novelistic imagination, the journey her parents undertook to Cuba for military training before returning to Argentina to join the armed struggle. In this later phase, personal memory increasingly gives way to collective reconstruction. Particular attention is devoted to A través del bosque (2023), which marks a significant transformation in Alcoba’s representation of historical trauma. The novel revisits the case of an Argentine exile living in Paris who murders her two children, presenting this act not as an isolated tragedy but as an expression of the enduring psychological consequences of state terrorism. Through the reinterpretation of this event in dialogue with the myth of Medea, Alcoba explores the transgenerational persistence of violence and the impossibility of escaping a traumatic past that continues to shape subjectivity, family relationships, and collective memory.
