Syra Alonso did not become involved in the intellectual circles and networks of exile. On the contrary, given her particular circumstances, she charted an alternative path of immersion in the indigenous communities of Mexico, thanks to which she was able to promote a body of work that has remained largely unknown until today. An analysis of her writing reveals a profoundly heterodox construction of identity, in which cultural and gender otherness are central themes. The Galician writer's disconnection from traditional spaces of intellectual legitimacy, together with her openness to other subalterns cultures, represents a radical form of contestation of the literary and political orthodoxies of her time.
