The present article offers a critical assesment of the impact that Juan Goytisolo´s engagement in North-African life and culture had in his literary criticism. The article consists of three interrelated sections. In the first one, I consider the striking difference between Goytisolo´s relation with Morocco and the deep African commitment of French intellectuals of the poststructuralist group like Foucault, Althusser, Derrida, Lyotard, and Badiou. In the second, I analyze the relevant components and functions of the autobiographical and critical narrative that, over the years, Goytisolo framed about his African conversion. In the third and final section, I examine the accuracy of Goytisolo´s version both of the so-called "literatura mudéjar" and of the mudejarismo that supposedly informs what he takes to be the thee masterpieces of Spanish literature, namely el Libro de buen amor, La Celestina and the Quijote.
