This article analyzes the film adaptations of two short stories by Jorge Luis Borges (“Theme of the Traitor and the Hero” and “The Gospel According to Mark”), focusing on the ways in which the audiovisual versions of these texts recontextualize the plot and bring their political sense to the fore. The films Strategia del ragno (Bernardo Bertolucci, Italy, 1970) and Gost (Aleksandr Kaidanovsky, USSR, 1987) relocate their respective hypotexts within the framework of two political processes –Italian Fascism and Soviet Communism– rejected by the Argentine writer. These displacements enhance the political nature of both stories, as they inquire about the power of the imaginary, the fragility of memory and the precariousness of individual freedom.
