Pervigilium Veneris (The Vigil of Venus), a Latin poem of late antiquity, anonymous, is testimony about an ancient New Year�s celebration that entailed a sexual permissiveness preceded by an abstinence period. The poem is here analyzed highlighting those ritual elements and indicating its parallels to other cultures.
