The article analyzes the significance of Gertrude Stein’s life and work in the context of the aesthetic models and preferences of the first half of the 20th century in Europe and America. Criticized and often ridiculed both for her uncompromisingly experimental literary texts and unorthodox lifestyle, she was also revered for her excellent taste and judgment as regards the contemporary visual arts, and admired for the courage and persistence with which she developed her unique modes of writing. Her innovative literary style became later, in the second half of the century, the paradigm for most of the postmodern aesthetic experimentation. The article also attempts to explore the functions of her most distinctive narrative device which was repetition, in its both abstract, non-referential, and neo-realistic, cultural, gender- and class-inflected dimensions
