Since its outbreak in 2008, the economic crisis has had a major impact on the Spanish performing arts. The increase in the level of VAT charged on cultural events and the reduction of public support has resulted in a significant reduction in audience sizes and many theatres have been forced to close down. Although somewhat paradoxically, the Independent Theatre in Madrid is thriving: many new spaces and theatre formats have also emerged in the Spanish capital since 2008. Taking La Casa de la Portera (founded by José Martret and Alberto Puraenvidia in Madrid in 2012) as an emblematic example, in this article we will approach the phenomenon of casas-teatro to examine the specific characteristics of this kind of independent theatre space. In order to better appreciate this phenomenon, we will compare it to a similiar case, the proliferation of the casas-teatro in Buenos Aires since 2001, that is since the outburst of the socio-economic crisis in Argentina.
