Este trabajo analiza el tema del cautiverio y el mundo islámico en El amante liberal de Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), uno de los escritores imprescindibles de la literatura española. El autor estuvo en el cautiverio turco en el periodo 1575-1580 y así conoció distintas facetas del mundo islámico. En muchas de sus obras, en el teatro y en algunas de las Novelas ejemplares, el autor manchego presenta este tema del cautiverio. En El amante liberal el mundo islámico lo conocemos a través de los ojos de Ricardo y Mahamut, también sabemos sus historias personales, si bien el autor deja mucho a la imaginación de los lectores, y también detalles de la vida socio-política y económica en Nicosia. Cervantes utiliza los datos históricos para la creación de esta novela corta y logra describir con mucha precisión el mundo islámico.
This paper focuses on confinement and the Islamic World in El amante liberal by Miguel de Cervantes, who spent five years of his life in the Turkish confinement, precisely from 1575-1580. In this manner, he comes to know the distinct facets of Islamic World. In many of his works, including theater and some of the Novelas ejemplares, Castilian author presents the element of confinement and its aftereffects. In El amante liberal we know this Islamic World through the eyes of Ricardo and Mahamut, two important protagonists: they start the dialogue and thus from their dialogues, we come to know the personal histories of the protagonists along with socio-political and economic lives of the Islamic World of Nicosia.
Similar to many Cervantine works, the author leaves much to the imagination of the readers. The Castilian author has used the historical facts for the creation of this short novel and has been successful in the minute description of Islamic World.
