    En este artículo se destaca la importancia del lenguaje en la construcción de las nuevas naciones hispano-americanas. La pregunta central al respecto era si al quiebre político con el imperio español debía seguir un quiebre lingüístico, de forma que el lenguaje de las nuevas naciones no dependiera de las normas de la Real Academia Española. Si bien el debate duró décadas, a favor y en contra, hacia finales del siglo XIX la mayoría de los países hispanoamericanos establecieron relaciones formales con su contraparte peninsular

    This article underlines the importance of language in the building of the new Spanish American nations after Independence. The central question at the time was whether a new approach to language should follow the political break with the empire. The debate centered on the norms of the Royal Academy of Language in Madrid, especially regarding grammar and orthography. By the end of the nineteenth century, the debate was settled in favor of a collaboration between the academies on both sides of the Atlantic
