Este artículo propone un acercamiento a la obra de dos pioneros de la fotografía profesional y comercial en América Latina: Martín Chambi (Perú, 1891-1973) y Harry Grant Olds (Estados Unidos, 1869-1943) y a las relecturas que de las mismas hicieron dos fotógrafos contemporáneos: Juan Manuel Castro Prieto (España, 1958) y Alfredo Srur (Argentina,1977) respectivamente. De la variedad de temas abordados por estos artistas nos detendremos en aquellas imágenes que tienen al sujeto-trabajador y a las clases populares como objetivo primordial. Observaremos la reinterpretación que Castro Prieto y Srur hicieron de los archivos históricos, al tomarlos como punto de partida para la creación de su propia obra. Sus lecturas no se limitan a reconocer o reponer el referente evocado, sino que interrogan a la imagen, la presentan en su materialidad y fuerzan su sentido.
This article proposes an approach to the work of two pioneers of professional and commercial photography in Latin America: Martín Chambi (Peru, 1891-1973) and Harry Grant Olds (United States, 1869-1943) and to the analysis carried out by two contempo-rary photographers: Juan Manuel Castro Prieto (Spain, 1958) and Alfredo Srur (Argentina, 1977). The essay will focus on worker-subject and the popular classes as their primary objec-tive. We will observe the reinterpretation that Castro Prieto and Srur made of the historical archives, taking them as a starting point for the creation of their own work. His readings are not limited to recognizing or replacing the evoked referent. They question the image present-ing its materiality and forcing its meaning
