El artículo analiza el valor arquetípico de un personaje clave de nuestra cultura judeocristiana: Caín. Para ello, en primer lugar, se enumeran las principales interpretaciones del Génesis 4: 1-16. A continuación, se hace un breve repaso histórico de los diferentes usos y valores que se han otorgado a este personaje en la literatura española desde la Edad Media, para detenerse en el teatro del Siglo de Oro español. Este estudio aproximativo al personaje de Caín se desarrolla dentro de un marco metodológico basado en tres categorías, dependiendo de la relevancia o intenciones que la obra pretenda otorgar. A saber: una simple cita del personaje, una relectura plana del mito o una relectura profunda, cuyas interpretaciones, como se verá en este artículo, se asientan en lo más profundo de nuestras raíces culturales.
The article analyses the archetypal value of a key character in our Judeo-Christian culture: Cain. For that purpose, firstly, its list the main interpretations of Genesis 4: 1-16. Then, a brief historical review is made of the different uses and values that have been given to this character in Spanish literature since the Middle Ages, to stop at the theater of the Spanish Golden Age. This approximate study of the character of Cain is developed within a methodological framework based on three categories, depending on the relevance or intentions that the play intends to grant. Namely: a simple quotation of the character, a flat re-reading of the myth or a profound re-reading, whose interpretations, as will be seen in this article, are based in the depths of our cultural roots.
