La correspondencia cruzada entre la nobleza flamenca y el IX duque del Infantado materializa la red clientelar de este aristócrata en los Países Bajos españoles. Analizando las cartas se pueden entrever algunos de los mecanismos utilizados para mantener a la nobleza leal en un momento tan inestable como finales del siglo XVII. El duque del Infantado, sumiller de corps de Carlos II y miembro del Consejo de Estado, recibió varias peticiones de nobles que, conjugándolas de forma oportuna con las mercedes correspondientes, podían asegurar la lealtad de un territorio remoto y que sufría guerras con Luis XIV.
The correspondence between the Flemish nobility and the 9th Duke of Infantado materializes this aristocrat’s patronage network in the Spanish Low Countries. Analyzing the letters, one can glimpse some of the mechanisms used to maintain the loyalty of the nobility during such an unstable period as the end of the 17th century. The Duke of Infantado, sumiller de corps of Carlos II and advisor to his Council of State, received several requests from nobles. By timely combining the favors associated with these requests, he could ensure the loyalty of a remote territory, which was suffering from wars with Louis XIV.
