The hiatus resolution by synaeresis and synaloepha in Spanish is described and assessed by the normative authority in terms that lead to a predicament between grammar and the literary canon as well as geographic statements and a register restriction from the normative point of view that does not seem to reflect oral reality. This paper analyses the status of the issue and reasons the need to reconsider the current normative judgment on the anti-hiatus tendency.
